The United States national football team’s brief history
Foundation and early World Cup success (1885–1950)
The United States played its first international match in 1885 in New Jersey, losing it to Canada 1 -0. In 1916, the team recorded its first official international victory after defeating Sweden 3 -2 in Stockholm. Also in 1930, they participated in the FIFA World Cup and finished in third position, which remains their best-ever position. They finished third overall, which remains their best-ever World Cup result. In 1950, the Americans shocked the football world by defeating England 1-0 in a match famously known as the Miracle on Grass.
Decline and return to the World stage (1960–1999)
The national team struggled for relevance during the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s, missing several World Cups. In 1988, FIFA awarded the United States hosting rights for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. After that, in 1990, the USA qualified for the World Cup, ending a 40-year absence from the tournament. In the World Cup 1994 version, the Americans advanced to the knockout stage for the first time since 1930. The decade ended on a disappointing note as the team lost all three matches at the 1998 World Cup in France.
Modern growth and the golden generation (2000–2026)
In the 2002 FIFA World Cup the United States reached the quarterfinals. During the 2010 World Cup competitions, Landon Donovan’s made an historic goal against Algeria which helped the team to move to the round 16. They also qualified for the 2014 World Cup. Led by Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, and Tyler Adams they failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Being the Co-hosts for the 2026 competitions the team has made history in its first match after winning 4 -1 against Paraguay.

Another late injury setback for Boks?
The Springboks could be forced into another late change ahead of Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld.
According to Rapport, Canan Moodie is an injury doubt for the Pretoria showdown, raising the possibility of another last-minute change to Rassie Erasmus’ match 23.
If Moodie is ruled out, Ethan Hooker is expected to slot in on the left wing.

The Springboks were dealt two major injury blows on the eve of their 45-21 victory over England last week, when Siya Kolisi (hamstring) and Eben Etzebeth (concussion) were both withdrawn.
That forced Erasmus into a significant reshuffle, with Pieter-Steph du Toit moving to lock and taking over the captaincy, while Paul de Villiers and Cameron Hanekom started on the flanks.
According to Rapport, Kolisi is expected to return for next Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Wales in Durban.

Earlier this week, Erasmus indicated that Hooker was on track to be fit for the Wales Test after recovering from a shoulder injury suffered while playing for the Sharks against the Ospreys in April.
However, if Rapport’s information proves correct, the 23-year-old could be called into action a week earlier.
Hooker last played for the Springboks against Wales in Cardiff on 29 November, where he featured on the right wing.

Inaugural skipper hails record-breaking Rassie
Captain Pieter-Steph du Toit says Rassie Erasmus’ rise to become the Springboks’ most-capped head coach is fitting for a man who “really, really cares” about the team and the country. CLINTON VAN DER BERG reports.
Erasmus is set to break Jake White’s record of 54 Tests as Bok head coach against Scotland at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. He was also director of rugby during Jacques Nienaber’s 39-Test stint as head coach, taking the tally of Bok Tests played under Erasmus’ guidance to 93.
Du Toit, who captained South Africa for the first time after being named Erasmus’ inaugural Test skipper against Wales in Washington DC in 2018, said the milestone carries extra weight given the journey the pair have shared.
“You can’t ask for a better man than him to be able to reach what he has with this team,” Du Toit said on Friday. “As players and coaches, we are very proud of what he has achieved. Not only for us, but for the country.”
MORE: Rassie to break Bok coach record
The two-time World Rugby Player of the Year said Erasmus’s impact went beyond results on the field.
“He’s someone who really cares about the people of South Africa,” adding that the timing is made sweeter by Erasmus’ family being present at camp this week to share in the occasion.
“It’s good also to see that his family is around. Sometimes it’s tough being away from your kids, but I’m happy for him, and hopefully we can make it special for him on Saturday.”
WATCH: Boks rave about record-breaking Rassie
The captain also reflected on his own journey back from a severe health scare in 2020, one that at the time cast doubt over his rugby future. Now closing in on his 100th cap, Du Toit said he has never dwelt on how far he has come since.
“One of my strengths is I don’t think too much,” he quipped. “You don’t want to complicate matters or look too far ahead.”
He added that he draws instead on preparation and mental rehearsal to manage pressure moments on the field, saying he is simply “grateful and thankful” to still be playing at the level he is.
Du Toit, who has worn the captain’s armband intermittently since succeeding Siya Kolisi in various matches, said leading under Erasmus has never demanded anything beyond what he already believes in.
“There’s nothing extra expected of me,” he said. “It’s just to do whatever is expected on the field and lead by example.”
AFRICA PICKS: Nations Championship Round 2 accumulator
As for Scotand, Du Toit expects a hard battle.
“It’s not a secret what they want to do. They’ve got a very skilful backline, and a physical loose-forward mix focused on generating momentum.
“Finn Russell is one of the best playmakers in the world. Their back three is dangerous … Kyle Steyn knows us well as South Africans, understands our DNA, and has been playing well for them.
“It’ll be a tough game. They’ll try to keep the ball in play and challenge us in the wider spaces.”
