Brazil Win Indian Hearts at VYBK, Hand Out Jerseys to Fans at Half-Time

Brazil won the hearts of Indian football fans at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan during half-time of the historic meeting between India and Brazil on Saturday.

The match marks the first-ever meeting between the two nations at senior international level. It is also a landmark occasion for India, who are facing a top-ten-ranked opponent for the first time. India are ranked 137th in the world, while Brazil occupy fifth place in the FIFA rankings.

Brazil went into the break with a 2-0 lead, with Estevao and Pedro finding the back of the net. While Indian fans would have been hoping for a different scoreline, a few lucky supporters had an even bigger reason to leave the stadium with smiles on their faces.

During the half-time break, members of the Brazil team’s kit management staff came out carrying a box full of Brazil jerseys. The shirts were then distributed to fans in the lower-tier stands through the team’s mascot.

The official mascot of the Brazil national football team is Canarinho, popularly known as Canarinho Pistola — the “Furious Little Canary”. The mascot played a key role in handing out the jerseys to the fans, creating another memorable moment inside the packed VYBK.

This is Brazil’s first visit to Kolkata, and the fans in the city have made the occasion special with a warm reception for the five-time world champions. Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti and captain Marquinhos had earlier applauded the reception they received in the city.

The distribution of jerseys during the break appeared to be Brazil’s way of thanking the fans for the incredible welcome they have received since arriving in Kolkata.

For the supporters inside the VYBK, it was another special moment in what has already been a historic night for Indian football.
