Football Legend Lou Holtz, Golf Enthusiast, Dies at 89

Football coaching legend Lou Holtz, who died Wednesday at age 89, was equally passionate about golf, where he achieved a single-digit handicap and won the member-member at Augusta National in 2005.

Beyond his football coaching career at Notre Dame and other collegiate programs, Holtz hosted a SiriusXM radio show called "Holtz in One" and was a member at prestigious clubs including Lake Nona Golf & Country Club and Augusta National. His golf journey began unexpectedly when William & Mary made him golf coach in 1962 to boost his salary by $300, despite his lack of knowledge about scoring.

Holtz developed friendships with golfers including Lee Trevino and had a memorable story about being replaced on the Sports Illustrated cover by Jack Nicklaus after Nicklaus' historic 1986 Masters victory. Despite his football fame, Holtz considered his Augusta National win his greatest accomplishment, saying, "I'm on the plaque on the wall, which is my greatest accomplishment."
