Lions trade David Montgomery to Texans for draft pick

The Detroit Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans for a draft pick on March 2, freeing about $3.5 million in cap space.

Montgomery, 29, had a reduced role in 2023, falling to second behind Jahmyr Gibbs. The trade comes after Lions GM Brad Holmes said he would love to keep Montgomery but recognized the player’s desire to move.

The move saves the Lions roughly $3.5 million in cap room, though they will need to find a replacement. Potential free‑agency options include Brian Robinson, Najee Harris, Michael Carter and Emari Demercado.
