The Sixers have a late addition to their injury report — Kelly Oubre Jr. has been ruled out with an illness for their upcoming matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. Alongside Joel Embiid and Paul George, this now puts the Sixers down three starters into a contest that isn’t just on NBC, but is a special throwback presentation.
This was already going to be tough sledding against a Spurs team that is likely pissed off at their 11-game winning streak just being snapped.
Quentin Grimes would be the logical choice to replace Oubre in the starting lineup, though Nick Nurse has said at times they prefer bringing Grimes off the bench, especially while in a rhythm. Grimes is shooting 42% from three over his last six games.
Nurse would probably like to keep a longer forward in that spot, and Trendon Watford is really the only other option that could make sense. Justin Edwards will likely have to see some time in this one. Edwards has had such a hard time cracking the rotation that he was sent down for another G League appearance with the Delaware Blue Coats over the weekend.
So with roughly 56 points per game sidelined, the Sixers have to take on the second seed in the Western Conference at full strength. San Antonio’s only inactive is Mason Plumlee, out for return-to-play conditioning after signing with the Spurs last week.
